Division 813, 8-Ball League, Spring Session, March 16, 2009, Week 11
5th place Buckets vs. 6th place Bust n Balls

Losing the coin toss, Buckets’ captain Terry Butler announced first. Looking at one of the most talented team in the league and the only team boasting four SL-6 players, Terry selected his SL-5 ace to shoot first.

Match 1, Buckets played David Butler and Bust n Balls put up Mike Russell. The match was close between these two good shooting players, but on this night David had all the right moves. He shot well, played excellent defense and took advantage of Mike’s few mistakes. The outcome was all David. He won in four straight games, getting Buckets of to a great start.

Match 2, put Bust n Balls’ rookie Kevin Hite up against Jana Gallmeyer. Kevin looked sharp in this match. He put together two good games in just three innings, giving him a Rackless Night along with his win.

Match 3, Buckets announced Phil Gouloff and Bust n Balls’ came with Steve Schnelker. These guys went right after each other. Both players shot very well, used defense to the extreme, and the result after four games found them even at two each. In game 5 Phil opened his offensive game up and took control. Steve had two opportunities to win in games 6 and 7, but could not convert. In the end, Phil won the last three games to win the match and gave Buckets a 2-1 lead.

Match 4, Bust n Balls announced Wendy Henkel, so Buckets went for the match putting up one of their SL-6 sharpshooters Levi Butler. In games 1 and 2 Levi played flawless and showed why he moved up to level six so fast. He controlled both games and won both of them. In game 3 Levi ran into some bad luck when he pocketed an early eight giving Wendy the win from her seat. That win lit up Wendy, as she rolled everything in the pockets in game 4, coming away with another win and just like that she found herself on the hill. Game 5, Levi knew he had to buckle down if he was to win three straight games. Wendy actually got to the 8-ball first, but missed and Levi took off, running down to the eight ball and leaving himself a makeable shot. But as it has happened to all players, he stunned the crowed with a miss that left Wendy with an easy shot at the 8-ball and she hit it perfectly to win the game and the match. So after four matches, it’s tied two up.

Match 5, for the win. Buckets had to call upon Jena Gallmeyer on more time to protect the 23-rule. Bust n Balls put up their co-captain and best defensive player Clark Henkel. Jana won the lag and played well, but Clark was on his game tonight rolling through games one and two, winning both. In game 3, Clark pocketed an early eight, giving Jana a big win. After realizing Jana’s was on the hill, Clark settled back into his game, but Jana kept coming back. She actually got to the 8-ball first, but was left with a very difficult shot which she missed. Clark closed out the match by running his two remaining balls, leaving himself with a short 70-degree angle shot on the eight. Clark leaned down lined it up, took a few strokes, then walked away to think about it. The pressure was on. He walked back to the table, chalked his cue, addressed the cue-ball, then shot the eight perfectly into the corner pocket for the win and a huge come-from-behind team match victory for Bust n Balls.

Tonight’s matches were close and competitive. It came down to the last ball on the table of the last game. After the match, both teams shook hands and congratulated each other. Everyone knew this match could have gone either way.

The link below has photos of several matches.

[8]

http://www.photoworks.com/photo-sharing/shareSignin.jsp?shareCode=A18C0D2C7F8&cp=ems_shr_alb_pml&cb=PW

Livestrong o7o Shootstrong

Division 813, 8-Ball League, Spring Session, March 9, 2009, Week 10
11th place Pure Luck vs. 6th place Bust n Balls

Match 1, Pure Luck won the coin toss so Bust n Balls announced Kevin Hite. Pure Luck team captain Sherry Miller put up herself. Sherry won game 1, but could not hold Kevin back in the next two games. Kevin took the match 2-1.

Match 2, Darryl Oster was announced by Pure Luck and Bust n Balls put up Charlotte Butler. Charlotte won game 1 and Darryl won game 2, which set up the hill-hill collision. Darryl got to the eight ball first, but could not get a good shot at it. After Darryl fouled, with 2 object balls on the table, Charlotte called time-out. She set up the most difficult shot first and made it, which set up perfect shape for on her last ball. Using perfect speed, she canned that one also, leaving an easy shot on the 8-ball in the side pocket. Charlotte drilled the 8-ball and won the match, giving Bust n Balls a 2-0 match lead.

Match 3, Bust n Balls announced Steve Schnelker and Pure Luck came with Donne Bergen. Donnie got a two-game handicap and then started by taking game1, so in no time she was on the hill. Steve realized that he was playing a strong-shooting SL-3 and could not give her much to shoot at. Steve played methodically, shooting himself back in the match he won three straight games to make it a hill-hill match. Game 5, Steve got to the 8-ball first, but did not have a good shot. After another inning, he looked at the 8-ball again, but there was not much to see, another miss. Donna took over, she made her last two colored balls and gave herself good position on the 8-ball, which she pocketed on her first attempt, giving Donna a big win over a good shooting SL-5.

Match 4, Pure Luck announced James Vielee and Bust n Balls put up their veteran Chuck ‘CR’ Rhen. CR broke and came up empty. James put on a show by keeping the cue ball open and running the first rack. CR came back to win game 2. Then James got the rolls and CR got the hooks as James took the last 3 games for the victory, which tied the series at two each.

Match 5, for the win. Bust n Balls called upon Mike Russell and Crooked Cues announced Dan Johnson. Mike got off to a sold start by winning games 1 and 2. Dan got back in the match by making a long shot on the 8-ball to win game 3. Mike missed a good opportunity to take game 4, but missed a 3/4 length shot on the 8-ball. Game 5, same scenario, Mike missed on the 8-ball again and Dan won the game and made it to the hill. Mike recovered to win game 6, so now this match and the team match comes down to one last game. Game 7, Mike broke and took control. He got to the 8-ball first. This time he only needed one shot at blackie for the win. Mike’s good shooting gave Bust n Balls a close 3-2 match victory of Pure Luck.

Sorry folks, no pictures this week. I forgot the camera.

[8]

Livestrong o7o Shootstrong

Division 813, 8-Ball League, Spring Session, March 2, 2009, Week 9
2nd place, Crooked Cues vs. 7th place Bust n Balls

Match 1, opened with two SL-3s chalking up. Bust n Balls’ Kevin Hite won the lag, but Barry Colpetzer came out firing, taking the opening game. After that Kevin settled in his stroke and won the next two games to win the match.

Match 2, moving up to two SL-4s in this match. Crooked cues Josh Rose took the lag. After he missed a shot, Wendy Henkel took over with an impressive run-out to win game one. Then Josh got the rolls and never looked back by taking the next three games. His victory evened the series at 1-1.

Match 3, Bust n Balls announced co-captain Clark Henkel, so Crooked Cues put up Ernie Juarez. The players split the first two games, then Clark played two good patterns out to win the last two games and the match.

Match 4, Crooked Cues announced their captain Jason Morris. Bust n Balls’ countered with Mike Russell. Mike won the lag and took off. He won the match in four straight games. Jason had a tough night. The last game he scratched giving Mike ball in hand on the 8-ball. Mike won the match and also earned a Rackless Night patch for his effort.

Match 5, Bust n Balls announced Steve Pequignot. Crooked Cues put up undefeated and current Top Gun Mark Schuster. Steve won the lag by a hair. Steve shot through the colors in game one with perfect precision until he got to the 8-ball. He looked at a straight 3/4 table length shot that he calls a 90% makeable. But not this time. Mark took over and it was all over. Mark steam rolled, playing perfect shape and having only two unforced errors the entire match. Mark won in five straight games. Mark’s great shooting showed why he is the Top Gun in the division.

On the evening, Bust n Balls came away with a 3-2 match victory over a tough second place Crooked Cues team.
[8]

Below are a few photos of several of this evening’s matches.

http://www.photoworks.com/photo-sharing/shareSignin.jsp?shareCode=AB8A363C7F3&cp=ems_shr_alb_pml&cb=PW

Livestrong o7o Shootstrong

Division 813, 8-Ball League, Spring Session, February 23, 2009, Week 8
10th place, All Poke and No Stroke vs. 7th place Bust n Balls

All Poke and No Stroke captain Rick Mitchell won the coin toss and announced first.

Match 1, All Poke announced Phil Gray and Bust n Balls put up Steve Schnelker. Phil won the lag and broke. Being handicapped by two games Phil was just waiting for his chance to take two games from Steve, but it did not happen tonight. Steve was strong all match, making about every open shot he took. Steve stroked through the colors in four straight games to win the match. Bust n Balls goes up one - zip.

Match 2, Bust n Balls announced Charlotte Butler and All Poke put up Carol VanHoutin. Game 1, went back and forth. Finally, Carol got ball-in-hand and put together a nice three-ball run to win. Game 2, was about the same, except this time Charlotte got ball-in-hand. She also made a three-ball run, the last two were long shots. She positioned the cue ball perfectly for a long shot at the 8-ball and she nailed it for the win. Game 3, Charlotte maintained good control getting through her last two balls. She left herself a bank-shot on the eight ball. She took a timeout. After a discussion during the timeout, Charlotte maintained her composure, lined up the bank, and stroked her cue perfectly. Her timeout paid off, as she nailed the eight in the side pocket, for the win. At this point, Bust n Balls was in control with two match wins.

Match 3, All Poke announced one of their two SL-6 sharpshooters Greg VanHoutin, a 500 plus match player. Bust n Balls announced its second year sensation Mike Russell. Mike won the lag and started the game strong. It only took him one inning to capture an early win. If you know Greg, you should know he is not done. In game 2 Mike had only one miss, but he would never see the table again, as Greg ran-out to even the match. Game 3, Greg poured it on with another impressive win. In game 4 Greg ran into some bad luck pocketing an early eight. That evened the match 2-2. Greg won game 5 and in game 6 Mike had some bad luck as he returned Greg’s favor by pocketing an early-eight that put Greg on the hill. Game 7, Greg stayed focused and shot well for the win, giving All Poke and No Stroke their first match win of the evening.

Match 4, Bust n Balls announced Chuck Rhen and All Poke put up John Shelton. Chuck “CR” won the lag, and played very well in games 1 and 2, winning both of them. Just when CR appeared to have game 3 in the bag, he came up with a big miss which enabled John an opportunity to get his game going, which he did. Once John tasted a win, he was off. Game 4 was close, but John took advantage of a CR miss and made it work for him and a big win. All of a sudden things are even at two.

Match 5, All Poke and No Stroke captain Rick Mitchell announced himself, so Bust n Balls put up their captain Steve Pequignot, pairing up two SL-6s for the match. Game 1, Rick broke and pocketed a few balls, then Steve chalked-up and ran the table winning game one. Games 2 and 3 was all about cue ball control and Rick was looking good. He won them both. Game 4, Steve came back to even the match at two each. Games 5 and 6 went to Rick and in no time he was on the hill. Steve was not going down easily. He clawed his way around a series of hooks to win games 7 and 8, making the match interesting at hill-hill. Game 9, Steve’s break was not working all night and once again he came up dry. Rick took over and ran his seven object balls, but was hooked badly on the eight. Trying to get a good-hit, he fouled. Steve took out a few balls, then played safe. This time Rick got a good-hit, but when he turned the table over to Steve. Steve ran down to the 8-ball. Looking at a possible scratch on the eight, Steve used some extreme English, which avoided the scratch, but he missed the shot. So Rick has an opportunity to win the match, but he faces a reverse angle shot in the corner pocket and misses. Steve’s second look at the 8-ball in the final game was enough. He lined up a 3/4-table length shot and pocketed the 8-ball for the win, which gave Bust n Balls a 3-2 match victory for the evening.

After the match all of the players shook hands, high-fived and briefly chatted about the exciting match they just completed.
[8]

The link below has photos of two of the matches.

http://www.photoworks.com/photo-sharing/shareSignin.jsp?shareCode=A566A52C7CF&cp=ems_shr_alb_pml&cb=PW

Livestrong o7o Shootstrong
